Decca Radar Station

The Decca Radar Station sits on the site of two prefabricated timber sheds erected in 1961 to test Decca’s Radar division, on the barren terrain of the Dungeness coast. Shape were appointed for the technical design and delivery of the internal fit-out, working alongside Johnson Naylor, MS-DA and Forma to convert this old site into a contemporary, luxury guesthouse for two, complete with sea views and sauna. To complement the views that the Station offers across Dungeness’s desert-like surroundings, we created the cosy, intimate interior for a serene coastal getaway, which sits in contrast to the windswept surroundings and ever-changing weather conditions.

The seamless approach and consistent use of materials frame the views created by the large picture windows.

Within the living space, a herringbone brick floor is complemented by the white-washed Oak clad walls & reveals.

The floating kitchen sits effortlessly within the space, combining white sprayed doors with a recessed handle detail and a Hi-Macs worktop to complete the contemporary, minimalist aesthetic. A sunken shelf and splashback, all in Hi-Macs, maintain the seamless finish utilised elsewhere. Matching floating shelves are accented by underlit LEDs, whilst the bottom shelf traverses across the wall, forming the window ledge to create a continuous, flush finish.

The wardrobe is hidden behind custom Oak doors that sit flush with the wall panelling.

In the bedroom, light-grey stained Oak Panels create a tranquil ambiance and offer a subtle contrast to the white-washed Oak used throughout the living spaces, whilst stained Oak flooring with solid nosing completes the contemporary aesthetic.

The sauna is a standout feature of the Station. Using raw Hemlock slats, we created the wall cladding, flooring, bench seating and shutter doors, which open into the bathroom, in-front of the sunken tub, allowing the occupant to look out through the large picture window, affording sea views over the raw & rugged terrain.
